Mother's Day 2001 Dress Form

This is a dress form that I made for my mother for Mother's Day 2001.
While she watched me make it from beginning to end,
she won't know that I actually made it for her until she sees this web page!

SURPRISE!!!

 About the pattern:

The pattern and instructions for this dress form (without embellishment)
can be found in the July 2001 No. 95 issue of Threads Magazine.
The website for Threads Magazine is:
http://www.taunton.com/th/index.htm

ERROR ON PATTERN:

Please note that it appears to me that the front and back skirt patterns
have been mis-labeled.
If you fold up the bodice waistline seam allowances
and match those pattern pieces to the skirt waistline seam allowances,
you will find that they do not match the skirt pieces for which they are intended.

When I attached the embellished skirt to the bodice,
the backside was flat, and the front was gathered and very rounded.
I removed the skirt, turned it around, and it fits much more nicely.

About this Dress Form:

This dress form stands just under 10" tall, and is a 150% enlargement
of the pattern in the magazine.
At first I thought this size would be too tall,
but I am pleased with it.

A suggestion I would make would be to either
a) stay-stitch all seam lines of cut pattern pieces; or
b) mark the pattern on the fabric, embellish, and then cut out and assemble.

I initially intended to stuff this dress form with wool.
However, the wool that I have is very dark, and since the white fabric
was translucent enough for the dark wool to show through,
I stuffed it temporarily with polyester batting.
Polyester batting (which is suggested in the pattern)
is not good for pins and needles--it wicks moisture and will cause rust.
I intend to remove the bottom piece and resew it to remove some gathers,
and at that time
I plan to replace the polyester batting with light colored wool.

 Ribbon Used:

I used 1 package of Petals "Romantic Roses" in 4mm for the flowers
and 1-1/4 packages of Petals Spring Green for the leaves.
I used DMC floss for the stems and lines on the buds.
The feather stitches were also made with DMC floss in a softer green color.
