Tatted Butterflies

These are pictures of butterflies made from a pattern by Dolly Hollander,
sent to the e-tatters@yahoogroups.com mailing lins on April 21, 2001.

The pattern is:

Ring: 9ds, p, 1ds, p, 1ds, p, 4ds, p, 3ds. Close, but do not reverse.
Ring: 3ds, + to last p of previous ring, 3ds, p, 1ds, p, 5ds. Close, but do not reverse.
Ring: 5ds, p, 1ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds. Close, but do not reverse.
Ring: 3ds, + to last p of previous ring, 4ds, p, 1ds, p, 1ds, p, 9ds. Close, but do not reverse.

Leave ends long enough to tie a knot for the butterfly's head
and then small knots about 14" to 1/2" from the head and then cut thread.

These butterflies were made with size 10 cotton crochet thread.

These butterflies were made with size 10 Caron cotton crochet thread.

These butterflies were made with size 5 pearle cotton.

REVISION:

After practicing with this pattern, I decided to make a modification.
Instead of just closing each ring and starting the next one
without reversing my work and tying a knot,
I decided to go ahead and reverse my work, tie a knot,
and then add a 1 ds chain.
This allowed me to get back to the same starting point for the next ring
as I would have been at after just closing (and not reversing) the previous ring.
This allowed me to have all of "right" and "wrong" sides
of each of the rings facing the same direction,
and the extra little chains opened up the center of the butterfly.
I like this more open little butterfly,
especially since a bead could be added in the center of the body.

Here is a picture of the two butterlies.
The revised butterfly is on the left, and the revised pattern follows.

The revised pattern is:

Ring: 9ds, p, 1ds, p, 1ds, p, 4ds, p, 3ds.
Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ch: 1ds. Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ring: 3ds, + to last p of previous ring, 3ds, p, 1ds, p, 5ds.
Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ch: 1ds. Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ring: 5ds, p, 1ds, p, 3ds, p, 3ds.
Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ch: 1ds. Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ring: 3ds, + to last p of previous ring, 4ds, p, 1ds, p, 1ds, p, 9ds.
Close, tie knot and reverse work.
Ch: 1ds. Close, tie knot and reverse work.

Put the needle thread through the loop on the first Ds of the first chain, and tie a square knot.
This brings the body together, and centers the "head" formed with the square knot.
Leave ends long enough to tie a knot for the butterfly's head.

These are pictures of butterflies made from a pattern found at
http://www.geocities.com/tatrasutra/tatbtrfly.html.

The butterfly on the top left is made with size 10 crochet cotton.
The butterfly on the top right is made with Caron size 10 crochet cotton.
The two butterflies on the bottom are made with size 5 pearle cotton.

The following butterflies were made with DMC Embroidery Floss,
with a change in the pattern.
Instead of the Josephine Knots for the head:
5 ds, very small picot, 5 ds, close ring (do not reverse work).
Then I used a piece cut from the extra thread on the needle,
to pull through the small picot on the head.
I tied the thread in a square knot, and trimmed to form antennae.
I found this was much easier to work with than the Josephine Knots
and very long picot that had to then be cut and tied.
