  STEP 21. Make another series of gathering stitches as described in Steps 11. to 13. previously. However, note that when you make the stitch on the rose, you will be making it on the first gathered petal. Look for a fold in the gathering that folds up toward you and make your stitch there. Remember to keep your thumb under the gathered ribbon so that you do not inadvertently stitch through more than one layer of ribbon. Making your stitch on the fold of the gathered ribbon will keep the stitch from showing, even if you are using contrasting thread.
